Too bad. *g* Because I'm reading "Off Armageddon Reef" by David Weber, and thus far, I have this to say.
Dear Mr. Weber,
If you plan to write about languages changing over time, for the sake of your readers' sanity, read a book on linguistics first. Or look it up on Wikipedia. Or ANYTHING.
Sincerely,
Me.
So we have this colony world that was settled about a thousand years ago by (to simplify the plot greatly) a fundamentalist religious cult -- I mean, clearly it's more complicated, but that's the nutshell version. And what Weber's done is attempted to show that a great deal of time has passed by throwing random y's and h's into common English names. So ALL the characters have eyebleed-inducing names like Dynnys and Myllyr and Wyllym and Haarahld and (I think this is my personal favorite so far for its sheer gratuitousness) Ahdymsyn. (Well, Zherald Ahdymsyn if you want to be precise. God, I can't even type that.)
Adding to the amusement, names of places and deities and historical people (like, say, the Archangel Langhorne, one of the founders of the colony and the cult) have apparently survived with perfectly static pronunciation right down to the present day.
Maybe the early days of the colony saw a tragic shortage of vowels, and they had to make do with Y's. Poor people.

Does anyone know of a nearby place to take old clothing for recycling? I don't mean I want to donate wearable clothing to Goodwill. I'm talking about clothing that's no longer usable as clothing (torn, threadbare, etc.) but could be ground up and recycled as insulation, pulp, or something like that. Ideas?
Maybe old news/consumer basics but so you know...
I have RCN for cable Internet only and I was on some "deal" of $44./mo.,for 6 months. I noticed this month that the RCN bill was $61. I called of course and questioned it- who keeps track of "deal" timeframes? . Was told that the deal had expired. I said I needed to get the same rate or I was going to shop around. The sales person offered $10./mo reduction after putting me on hold for a few minutes. I repeated that I needed the same deal. Again on hold but she came back and said they would offer $20./mo off for 6 months.
This is the second time I have been through this boring exercise with RCN. I probably should shop around but am not yet totally weaned from my @rcn.com email address.

What the...?
While trawling through my drafts folder, desperately searching for something or another... I come across this. Leesa, I only have the vaguest memory of this, but somehow... I think this is your fault. Actually, the more I think about it, I'm really sure you're responsible for it. *g*

Hello LJ-verse! Sorry to have been so quiet as of late. Been really tied up with buying a house/moving, so whatever free time I've had, has usually been spent with a vacant stare and a mind trying to figure out what I've forgotten. I think my upcoming New Year's resolution might be "do less ostrich impressions", or something of the like. I've talked to some of you in quasi-recent memory, but how's everyone else doing?
And also, because I'm a multi-tasker like that, I'm posting this now. Possibly because an anonymouse has been giving me not-so-subtle hints to post one of these for a few weeks now.

Hello!
I have a huge amount of boxes that need to be shipped, and I don't know what my options are outside of the UPS store and FedEx (They're too big for the USPS.) Are there other options?

I've put two more jigsaws on the Atlantis jigsaw page on my website and added a Sentinel jigsaw page as well.
That'll probably be it for now, though I'm not ruling out adding more sometime in the future.
You can always go to Jigsaw Planet and add your own pics if you want - you don't even have to sign up to do so!

I'm finally giving in and getting a blackberry, and I see they have them at Metro PCS. Has anyone had any experience with them and what do they think? Any other recommendations locally of where to go? I have verizon phone service if that makes any difference.

I was outside just now to turn off the chickens' night light, and I do not lie, I heard something off in the woods, quite nearby, that sounded EXACTLY LIKE THIS. And then it did it AGAIN.
I can guess what it was. I know we have a lynx around here. I've seen it up close in the yard. (And let me tell you, it scared the bejeezus out of the dog; he didn't even know cats came in that size! I wasn't too comfortable myself.) But, seriously, that sounded like the frame of the horror movie right before Our Heroine turns around and shrieks and blood splatters all over the wall.
I think Our Heroine is staying inside the rest of the night.

Since good old NZ TV will take ages I have decided to buy Burn Notice season 2 from Amazon. Yay! I am correct in thinking that Burn Notice has been renewed for a fourth season? I have only just finished the first season!
I was writing my Christmas cards to send overseas (they will become happy new years cards by the time they arrive) and found that I am missing a few addresses. Curses to deleting emails and not writing down the addresses - they will now become e-cards.
I hope you are all having fun christmas shopping and will enjoy the time with family and friends - my Christmas will be spent at the beach; avoiding sunburn and hoping for no rain.
PS Thanks to anonymous who gave me a lovely virtual cookie. Cheers.

Now I must be getting back to my Yuletide fic (ahahah oscillating between fist-pumping and hand-wringing...there's no actual limit on crack in a fanfic, right? like, they don't explode if you try to stuff too much wrongness into one? ^^;;) and my fic for the

Where might I be able to purchase a bottle of authentic, delicious maple syrup? It'll be a gift for my British friend. I'd also rather buy from a store in the Boston area than order online.
